What does the WhatsApp Business API actually cost, including the parts nobody mentions?

Two separate cost components, and how to spot a hidden markup on either one. 2 min read

The cost of the WhatsApp Business API always has two components. A provider who does not separate them clearly is usually hiding something in one of them.

1. Message fees, paid to Meta rather than to your provider

Meta charges for messages you start, meaning templates. The rate depends on the country you are messaging and on the category: utility is cheaper, marketing costs more. Meta publishes the full per-country list, and it changes from time to time, so any provider quoting you a single global figure is rounding in their own favour.

What competitors tend to leave out: replying to an incoming question needs no template — so none of the rates above apply to conversations your customer starts.

How to spot a markup: if message fees appear on your provider's invoice rather than being billed by Meta directly to your account, there is almost certainly a margin inside them. Marking them up by 20 to 50 percent above Meta's published rate is common practice. Ask one question: "Who does Meta bill?"

2. Platform fees, meaning your provider's subscription

This is where the range is enormous: from a few tens of dollars a month to several hundred, often with a per-agent seat fee and a setup fee on top. The questions worth asking are simple. Does the price go up when I hire staff? Is there an annual contract? Is there a setup fee?
