My number quality rating has gone yellow or red

What it means, why it happened, and how to recover before the number gets restricted. 2 min read

Meta scores every number with a quality rating: green (good), yellow (needs attention), red (at risk of restriction). The rating falls when recipients block or report your messages.

Why this is serious

A red rating left alone leads to a lower sending limit, and in the worst case the number is restricted outright. For a business whose customers live on WhatsApp, that is an operational crisis. Deal with it while it is still yellow.

The usual causes

  1. Messaging people who do not feel they ever agreed to it. A purchased list, or numbers collected without consent, is the fastest route to red.
  2. Too often. A daily notification that does not matter gets you blocked rather than read.
  3. Content that does not match expectations. Someone agreed to appointment reminders and then received a promotion.

How to recover

The principle that keeps a rating green: send the message that you, as the recipient, would not want to block. The quality rating is only a mirror of that.
