I get "Account Already Added to Another Facebook Business"
While connecting your number, a box appears titled "Account Already Added to Another Facebook Business", saying roughly: You can only add a WhatsApp Business account to one Meta business account. To add this business, first remove it from [other business name].
Nothing is broken and there is nothing wrong with your number. Meta simply enforces one rule: a WhatsApp number can belong to only one Meta business portfolio at a time. Yours is still recorded against an older portfolio, so it has to be released there first.
The name in that message matters
Meta names the portfolio currently holding your number. Read it carefully, because it usually tells you immediately who has to release it:
- Your own business name — you created this portfolio at some point, possibly years ago. You can release it yourself.
- A vendor, agency, or former provider — they hold it. Ask them to remove it, or ask to be made an admin of that portfolio.
- A name you do not recognise at all — usually a previous owner of the number, or someone you once asked to set things up. See the last section.
If you have access to the old portfolio
Only the number needs releasing, not the whole account. Other numbers in that portfolio are unaffected.
- Open WhatsApp Manager with the Facebook account that has access to that portfolio.
- Top left, make sure the selected portfolio is the one named in the message, not your new one.
- Go to Phone numbers and find your number.
- Click the three-dot icon on its row, choose Delete phone number, and confirm.
- Wait about five minutes, then run the connection again from your WACO dashboard.
If that menu is missing, the other route is through business settings: business.facebook.com/settings → Accounts → WhatsApp Accounts → select the account → Remove. That route releases the whole WhatsApp account, so only use it when no other number lives inside it.
If you do NOT have access to the old portfolio
This is the common case, and honestly: without access you cannot release it yourself. In order of what actually gets results:
- Contact whoever owns that portfolio first. Meta has already named them. The vendor or agency who once set up your WhatsApp will usually release it within minutes, because the number is of no use to them either.
- Ask to be made an admin rather than asking them to remove it. Often faster: once you are an admin there, you do the steps above yourself with no back and forth.
- If you are genuinely stuck, raise it with Meta through Business Support Home. Meta can force the release, but they will ask for proof the number is yours, so have a carrier bill or business document in the matching name ready.
Not the same as "number already in use in the WhatsApp Business app"
The two messages look alike but the problems differ. If the complaint is that the number is in use in the WhatsApp Business app, nothing needs releasing at all: coexistence handles it without losing a single chat. See my number is already in use on the WhatsApp Business app.
This page is specifically about the Meta business portfolio, which really does have to be released first.
