Meta banned my number and nothing sends any more

Why it happens, how to appeal, and how to chase payments without getting banned. 4 min read

Meta can ban a number at any time. When it happens, sending through the WhatsApp Business Platform stops completely: broadcasts do not go out, reminders do not go out, the API refuses. The WhatsApp app on the phone may still work — that is a different pathway, and it is not a sign the number is fine.

A green quality rating does not mean safe

This is the confusing part. A number can be banned while its quality rating still reads green. They measure different things: quality counts how many recipients block or report you, while a ban comes from the policy side — display name, message content, or recipient consent.

That is why the WACO dashboard flags bans separately: the Numbers card shows a red "Banned by Meta" marker in place of the quality indicator, and the account owner gets an email as soon as we detect it (usually within a few hours).

The three usual causes

1. The display name does not represent the business. A personal name, an abbreviation, or anything that cannot be tied to a registered business gets rejected. A rejected name often turns into a banned number if left alone.

2. Message content reads as pressuring or threatening. This is what most often hits debt collection. Mentioning field visits, legal consequences, or disclosing someone's debt status breaches WhatsApp policy — even when the debt is real and you have every right to collect.

3. Messaging people who never agreed to be contacted. One broadcast to a list of numbers with no relationship to you is enough to trigger mass reports.

How to appeal

  1. Fix the cause first. An appeal filed without any change is usually rejected again, and repeated rejections make recovery harder.
  2. Open WhatsApp Manager in Meta Business Suite → Phone numbers → select the affected number.
  3. Submit a Request review. Meta usually replies within a few business days to the admin email on your business account.
  4. Complete business verification if you have not — verified accounts are far easier to restore.

Appealing is free. In the WACO dashboard, the Banned by Meta page (linked from the red marker on the Numbers card) carries these steps along with the list of your affected numbers.

Chasing payments without getting banned

Collections over WhatsApp are allowed, and plenty of businesses run them safely. The key: state the facts of the bill and how to pay, then invite the customer to reach you. Do not state consequences. Compare:

Send only to customers who genuinely have a relationship with you, and offer a way to opt out.

While the number is still down

You can add another number and keep operating from it. But moving the same messaging pattern to a new number usually ends with that one banned too, and repeated bans can escalate to the business account level — which is much harder to recover.

Before your first collections broadcast: send us the copy first. We review it at no extra cost — far cheaper than recovering a banned number.
